Colourful camp oil paintings, animation videos and quirky photographies let your living room die a pink retro death.

BLAST! 2010
Cohesion Glass Network – Annual selling exhibition
September 9 – November 6, 2010
Zest Gallery is hosting BLAST! – the Cohesion Glass Networkʼs annual selling exhibition, for the second year running. This exciting collaboration will showcase some of the best British contemporary glass art, featuring sculptural and wall mounted work selected from Cohesionʼs talented members, both newcomers and more established artists.

This year, glass expert and collector Alan Poole is a co-curator of the exhibition. Alan is a director of North Lands Creative Glass in Lybster, Scotland, and runs Dan Klein Associates, which has been collecting and promoting British and Irish contemporary glass for three decades.

In close collaboration with Alan, we have selected 16 amazingly versatile artists whose work embodies a broad spectrum of processes and techniques. Glass is a fascinating medium for artists to explore and the results can be breathtaking. In the hands of Bruce Marks, a skilled glassblower with a keen interest in colour, molten glass becomes a solid substantial vessel. By contrast, Inge Panneels, a pate de verre expert, creates fragile floating vessels, granular and textured, from the same core substance.

A very special feature of the exhibition is a tribute to Dan Klein, the UKʼs pre-eminent glass advocate, writer and collector who died last year. Adam Aaronsonʼs glass studio, adjacent to Zest Gallery, has made a glass bowl for each of the 16 artists to turn into a unique work of art. These will be priced at £125 each and the full proceeds of these one-off pieces will be donated to North Lands Creative Glass for Dan Klein’s Memorial Fund.

In partnership with UCA, Studio 106 Art Gallery has selected works by recent graduates from their final exhibition at UCA, a show that represents the culmination of the year’s study on the Foundation Programme. At an extremely important stage in the students’ professional and personal development, Suupa Pupa Doompadee Dah! aims to support their progression into higher education and ultimately toward a career in the creative arts.
The exhibition brings together works by Laura Alabaf, Esther Chung, Emily Hills, Lewis Ryland, Frances Tomlin, Alexandra Constantine and Amanda Woodcock.

The exhibition is directly inspired by the chant of the Oompa Loompa workers of Roald Dahl’s ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, a story that can be read as an analogy for the trials associated with the coming of age to adulthood. Referencing this period of growth and change, the exhibition aims to highlight the important stage on which the selected artists are embarking. In this vein, the title of the exhibition also refers to the Latin term ‘Pupa’, denoting the chrysalidian process through which insects undergo transformation. These transformative processes are inherently relevant to the work presented, addressing as it does themes of organic process, creativity and change.

The selected artists have a polymorphic approach and explore a variety of contemporary media. The works selected are the result of complex and thoughtful investigation into a range of diverse themes such as identity construction, psycho-geography, environmental issues and the body. Encouraging investment in talented young people, Suupa Pupa Doompadee Dah! provides support to these artists at an age when strengthening confidence and establishing support are a crucial part of their future.

Tony Sinden is increasingly considered a prominent figure within the development of British moving image – producing a body of innovative work throughout his career until his premature death in 2009. Sinden’s practice spanned four decades of substantial production, experiment and exhibition. He worked across a range of mediums: single screen 16mm, expanded 16mm, video, installation, slide and site related practices. His works reflect a sculptural use of video and questions of media, materials, time and space.

Picture This has a very special relationship with Tony Sinden, commissioning him to produce new works (Ancestral Voices 1993 and Dichotomy 2000) and working with him on his projects for almost fifteen years.

Nothing is Forever celebrates the completion of the SLG’s £2 million building project, bringing together wall paintings, drawings and text pieces by 20 British and international artists.

Seamlessly integrating art and architecture, each work is destined to be embedded in the fabric of the buildings when painted over at the end of the show. Nothing is Forever marks an important and transitional moment in the South London Gallery’s history as the institution expands into a formerly derelict house and a new building incorporating the surviving walls of a former lecture theatre and library. Feauring a 24 carat leaf wall painting, a 13-storey high design on a tower block and 5000-word film script handwritten directly onto the gallery walls, the exhibition draws visitors through the SLG’s new and existing spaces with a variety of approaches to making art directly on the walls.

Reflecting the scope of the SLG’s work in the local area in recent years, four parallel projects have been commissioned on walls by artists working with local residents, children, young people and gallery staff. Joanna Brinton, Orly Orbach and Matthew Shaw have worked with children from the SLG’s Making Play project to make works on Sceaux Gardens estate; Daniel Lehan has created a hoarding inspired by the words of children from Charlie Chaplin Adventure Playground; and Henna Nadeem collaborated with students from St Saviour’s and St Olave’s School on a mural project.

Nothing Is Forever is sponsored by Bloomberg

Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s classic fantasy, “Alice in Wonderland,” Fallis uses humour and absurd distortion to draw our attention to the issues that trouble her – mass consumerism, scientific distortion and environmental destruction: “When we consider our planet and its entire species we really are living in a wonderland,” she says. “In these works I am concerned about the growing divide between human kind and nature.”

After a year long residency at Kings Place, Abigail’s new found technical bravado, along with access to the skilled metal workers at Pangolin Foundry, has resulted in an exhilarating body of work, founded on surrealism and craftsmanship. This exhibition includes sculptures and works on paper made form a variety of materials including bronze, silver, plaster and papier mache.

A fully illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition and Abigail will give a talk about Fallis in Wonderland as part of the Talking Art Series on Monday 17th May.

Zest Gallery announces the opening of Natural Selection, a major solo exhibition of work by glass artist Tolly Nason.

Tolly developed her skills under some of the most influential and eminent glass artists in Sweden and the United States. Her inspiration and passion lies within natural subjects and the theme of evolution. She travels extensively and does meticulous research so that her work is not only artistically beautiful but also scientifically correct.

Alongside her career as a glass artist, Tolly has a degree in textiles and works as a professional photographer. This diverse creative background is mirrored by the variety of glass techniques she employs. With pate-de-verre, she expresses the vulnerability of glass; this quality can be found in her most recent series Whimsicals. In contrast, her finch beak sculptures from the installation Seeing the Light: Finch by Finch show how solid and dense glass can be.

Seeing the Light: Finch by Finch explores the significance of the 14 Galapagos finches to Darwin’s theory of evolution. Made to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of The Origin of Species, several of these extraordinary works are included in this exhibition. Princeton University has purchased a number of the sculptures for the foyer of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, where Peter and Rosemary Grant, emeritus professors and the world authorities on Galapagos Finches, have validated their scientific merit.

3 July – 7 August 2010
Preview: 2 July 2010

A crystal palace. A fortress of solitude. A mythical place of majesty and retreat. Destroyed.

A (science) fiction of sorts, of sculpture and images, of a broken utopia refracted through fragments – autonomous artifacts that together weave a suggested archeology. Of the shards of thought made into solid form. Into a form that is lost.

Works by the featured artists appears to transpose the architectural remains of this mythic place into a physical relationship with the gallery – a complex angular platform that is parasitically grafted to the gallery walls (Berimann), a jewel-like architectural addition that change the light from the skylights (Counsell) – or suggest an arcane practice of planning the building of cities through the use of crystals (Ricketts).

Photographs by Heather & Ivan Morison and Roy Voss provide clues to the setting of The Crystal Palace or to its wanderings. Their photographs suggest that the palace resides in many places, or exerts its influence there at least. Crystalline forms overlay themselves on lonely landscapes and natural forms. Deserted icebound vistas are tattooed with white signs that declare a calamity no longer visible. Fell they say. Fell. Fell.

The collapsing of the palace into shards. The broken remnants gathered for inspection. A road sign declaring the word Amethyst lies prone, ripped from the ground. A tangled line sprayed onto the wall a final act of desecration. Or perhaps a salutation we do not understand.
