Tony Sinden is increasingly considered a prominent figure within the development of British moving image – producing a body of innovative work throughout his career until his premature death in 2009. Sinden’s practice spanned four decades of substantial production, experiment and exhibition. He worked across a range of mediums: single screen 16mm, expanded 16mm, video, installation, slide and site related practices. His works reflect a sculptural use of video and questions of media, materials, time and space.

Picture This has a very special relationship with Tony Sinden, commissioning him to produce new works (Ancestral Voices 1993 and Dichotomy 2000) and working with him on his projects for almost fifteen years.

Saturday 26 June – 3pm

Auto Italia South East
1 Glengall Road
London
SE15 6NJ

Il Trasloco (Moving out of the future) is a 1991 independent documentary directed by Renato de Maria, now screened for the first time in the UK with English subtitles. Set in Bologna and retrospectively looking at the history of one of the key places where the Autonomia movement took place during the 1970s, the film is a surprisingly personal and heartbreaking recollection of the emptying of a household and the ending of an era, one that was possibly already dead.

Initially, the protagonist of the documentary appears to be Franco Berardi, aka Bifo, who narrates the story of the Autonomia movement, which was by its nature deeply intertwined with the intimate and personal lives of those who made it happen. However, the real protagonists of this film are the increasingly empty rooms of the flat in 19 Via Marsili, in Bologna. The silent walls speak through the voices of Bifo and many other ex-dwellers about the simple story of the rise and fall of a different – now almost incredible – way of life.

One of the most influential workerist social movements to emerge in Italy in the 1960s, the terms Autonomia or the Refusal of work have now become somewhat overused shorthand. However, what becomes clear watching this film is that they refer to a practical methodology of life rather than to the sterility of what remains in their theoretisation.

This screening will mark the launch of High performance dropping out (Art workers won’t kiss ass), which is a long term project hosted at Auto Italia. This project is a series of events, discussions, group meetings, workshops and screenings which investigate alternative methods of community, collaboration and communion in both art and non-art contexts.

§

This first ever screening of Il Trasloco to an English-speaking audience was made possible through a collaboration of Auto Italia and Through Europe (www.th-rough.eu). The translation from Italian is by Through Europe member Federico Campagna.

Why and how to make the transition from stage to screen.

Performing Arts Network and Development Agency (PANDA) have teamed up with our regional partner Chester Performs to deliver this free panel event, open to anyone working in the performing arts in the North West who is interested in getting involved with film.

Spotlight On Opportunities in Film for Performing Arts Practitioners is part of Chester Performs’ Screen Deva film and digital media festival; ten days of film screenings, digital media events, interactive artworks and participatory activity from Friday 28th May to Sunday 6th June 2010.

Join us at the Grosvenor Museum in Chester on Thursday 3rd June 2010 as our panel of guest speakers explain how you can use film to enhance your performing arts practice and give their expert advice on how to make the transition from stage to screen-based work.

Guest speakers:

• Chair, Pauline Brooks, a senior lecturer and researcher in dance and screen dance at Liverpool John Moores, having worked extensively in the UK and overseas as a dancer, choreographer and teacher.

• Tara Cook, Head of Film at Vision+Media, with an established career in film production, having collaborated on features such as Nil By Mouth, American Beauty, Lost In Space and Elizabeth.

• Beth McCann, a scriptwriting lecturer and consultant, runs primarycreations, a grassroots scriptwriting training initiative, is Co-Director of Not Part Of Festival and was Co-ordinator at Northern Film Network.

• Owen Williams, co-writer and director, alongside Adam Wright, of film production company Tomfoolery Pictures, one of the commissioned artists from the Screen Deva programme.

• Chris Lane, an independent film producer and creative entrepreneur who initiated and runs a website on behalf of the North West New Wave, a creative and social movement in the North West of England.

The panel discussion will run from 3.00pm till 5.00pm and will be followed by an informal networking session from 5.00pm till 6.00pm, where you can stay and chat with the guest speakers and make those important connections with people involved in filmmaking.

We also have an exclusive offer for all participants to attend one of the events in the evening’s Screen Deva programme – a screening of French film, Entre le Murs (The Class). Tickets for this show are available for a special discounted price of just £3! Details of how to access this special offer will be sent out when you book your place at Spotlight On Opportunities in Film for Performing Arts Practitioners.

International Fauna is a blast, an anti-anthem, a parade of the animal symbols designated by nation states quick change through a background of digital colour fields. The representations are matched back with their animal call, for the duration of the image – a concrete composition of the absurd. The work delights in these extraordinary attempts to project national values onto an animal form, and in the forms they have taken.

Join us at the Grosvenor Museum in Chester on Thursday 3rd June 2010 as our panel of guest speakers explain how you can use film to enhance your performing arts practice and give their expert advice on how to make the transition from stage to screen-based work.

KEY TOPICS:

• Why consider film – an overview of the industry and specific benefits of the sector including funding, support, unique attributes of the artform and region-specific opportunities.

• Opportunities for performing arts practitioners – entry points for performance makers, writers, directors and producers and practical considerations including getting paid, submitting and pitching work and recruiting a team.

• Using film in your performing arts practice – adding moving image to theatre and dance works, creating installations, recording the creative process, enhancing engagement with your audience.

• Getting started in filmmaking – how to convert existing creative work made for stage into film, considerations when creating new work for screen and differences in working methods.

GUEST SPEAKERS:

• A representative from the Film department at North West Vision and Media, which works on behalf of the digital and creative industries to grow a world-class digital and creative economy within the region.

• One of the Co-writers and directors of Tomfoolery Pictures, a film production company and one of the commissioned artists from the Screen Deva programme.

• Beth McCann, Northern Film Network Co-ordinator and scriptwriting consultant.

• Plus more to be announced…

WE WANT YOUR SHORT FILMS!!

Brain Wash presents a monthly night of innovative, refreshing and simply interesting short films. We are looking for innovative and exciting short filmmakers to showcase their work at the fourth film screening event in one of London’s trendiest bars, The Westbury.

A collaboration between young filmmakers, Brain Wash aims to showcase contemporary and artistic projects to those mindful of a monotone media culture. Original films are sent in by new, undiscovered and existing talent; scouted and selected by our curatorial panel to provide a brilliant monthly lineup.

Brain Wash seeks to bring together filmmakers, film lovers, and anyone looking for an out of the ordinary film experience. It provides an inspired alternative to mainstream cinema (and one that may encourage you to use your brain).

This is your last chance to get your film to us and be in with a chance to have your film selected for the ‘Best of Brain Wash’ Screening at The Tricycle Theatre.

All shorts should be:

No longer than 20 minutes

Aspect ratio 16:9

Submitted on DVD PAL

The film makers must own the rights for public screening, and agree to the film being shown free of charge.

DVDs cannot be returned so please do not send us originals.

All Shorts should be addressed to:

BRAINWASH
THE WESTBURY
34 KILBURN HIGH ROAD
LONDON
NW6 5UA

The deadline for film submissions is 22nd March. The event will take place on the 29th March. Please see our Facebook Page for more details.

Supported by Culture Ireland.

Artists’ film and video has been marked by a concern with context and site for many decades. Since the 1990s, it has been possible to identify both a renewed emphasis on the moving image in the spaces and sites of contemporary art and a new focus on the social and architectural history of cinema.

Maeve Connolly’s The Place of Artists’ Cinema: Space, Site and Screen (Intellect and University of Chicago Press, 2009) critically examines the relationship between cinema, site and place within contemporary art practice, exploring the production and exhibition of artists’ film and video within a range of contexts, from museums and galleries to public art projects, biennial exhibitions and art fairs. The book features in-depth readings of twenty-four recent works, including projected multi-screen narratives, site-specific projects, feature-length films and sculptural installations evoking the architecture of the movie theatre
