The Royal Watercolour Society [RWS] at Bankside Gallery is the premier centre for excellence for the art of watercolour. Established in 1804, the Society aims to encourage innovation in, and raise the profile of, this quintessentially traditional English medium. 2010’s Spring Exhibition is the latest chance to view and purchase Members’ fine works on paper, in a range of water-based media.

RWS Past President and Honorary Curator, Trevor Frankland, is the featured artist this year. The Private View opening evening on Thursday 18th March will see the launch of a new monograph on his life and work, Trevor Frankland: Between Clarity and Mystery. With well over 100 reproductions of his images in 160 pages, Simon Fenwick’s text explores Frankland’s interest in the occult and involvement in freemasonry, as well as his belief that composition and structure carry the soul of an artwork.  For Frankland’s involvement in art is not just a studio event, but also an holistic activity governing every aspect of his life; a statement that could be applied to many of the RWS Members and works that will be on display this March.

The Royal Watercolour Society Open Competition [formerly known as the 21st Century Watercolour Competition] is an open painting competition organised by the Royal Watercolour Society. An exhibition of successful submissions will be held at Bankside Gallery, London, next to Tate Modern, from 19th February -11th March. Admission is free, all the paintings will be in watercolour, acrylic, pen and ink or gouache, on paper, and are available to purchase.

Celebrating its twelfth anniversary, the competition is a passionate celebration of watercolour as a vibrant medium for the 21st century.  Unlike other painting competitions, the Royal Watercolour Society Open Competition identifies and supports artists of any age and is not prescriptive about size or subject matter. The diversity of chosen themes is one of the competition’s most entertaining aspects. It aims to encourage innovation in the use of water-based media on paper and to stimulate fresh approaches to what are considered to be watercolour’s unique strengths.

Prizes are awarded on the opening night, ranging from art materials, purchase prizes, a magazine article, and substantial cash awards.

The Royal Watercolour Society invites artists to submit works to the 2010 competition [formerly known as the 21st Century Watercolour Competition]

Celebrating its twelfth anniversary, this open competition is a passionate celebration of watercolour as a vibrant medium for the 21st century. Unlike other painting competitions, the Royal Watercolour Society Open Competition identifies and supports artists of any age and is not prescriptive about size or subject matter. It is also a celebration of the water-soluble medium.  All works produced in water based mediums, watercolour, acrylic and gouache are eligible.  Work can be sent in from artists worldwide, and there are 13 regional pick-up points around the UK, bringing submissions to Bankside Gallery in February.

The aim of the competition is to encourage innovation in the use of water-based media on paper and to stimulate fresh approaches to what are considered to be watercolour’s traditional strengths. Successful submissions will be exhibited at Bankside Gallery, London, from 19 February to 11 March 2009 and successful applicants will be invited to apply for election to the Royal Watercolour Society.

Important information

  • Artists are invited to submit up to three framed and glazed water-based paintings on paper.
  • Application Form deadline is 13th January 2010
  • Entry is £10 per work or free to full time students.
  • Send in dates are Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th February 2010 11am – 6pm.
  • Work will be selected on Monday 15th February
